SOLO : PIERRE DORION
Nov. 12 - Dec. 20, 2003
The
Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery presents Solo:
Pierre Dorion from November 12th to December 20th, 2003.
This exhibition includes some thirty paintings, collages,
and mixed media works
produced over a twenty-year time span; and draws special
attention to the vital roles that art history, photography,
and genre play in this Montreal artist’s work.
Since the 1980s, Pierre Dorion has received critical
acclaim for a realist style of painting that incorporates
visual
references to the past along with citations to the history
of painting. His interest in
representation extends beyond painting to photography,
and his art explores how these media come to shape the
ways in which the subject is framed. Whether it is through
reproductions of earlier
works of art, self-portraiture, urban views, or interior
scenes, Dorion’s work is as much a rigorous investigation
of the act of seeing as it is about the subjects he so
deftly paints. This exhibition
provides a wonderful opportunity for viewers to examine
firsthand the breadth of this artist’s talent.
Solo : Pierre Dorion is curated by Laurier Lacroix, Professor
of Art History at the Université de Québec à Montréal.
The exhibition is organized and circulated by the Galerie
d'art du Centre culturel
de l'Université de Sherbrooke, and funded by the
Ministère de la culture et des communications du
Québec, The Canada Council, Canadian Heritage,
and Ville de Sherbrooke. A publication with an
essay by the curator accompanies the exhibition.
Pierre Dorion was born in Ottawa in 1959, and was educated
at the University of Ottawa. His work has been exhibited
both nationally and internationally. In 1997, he was
awarded the Louis-Comtois
prize by the City of Montreal and the Association des
Galeries d’art contemporain. His work appears in
numerous public and private collections in Canada and
the United
States. Pierre Dorion is
represented by Galerie René Blouin in Montreal,
and the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York.
